Just posted a live recording of "Shunidam", a song by Tajik composer Ziyodullo Shahidi. We've recently been exploring Central Asian folk songs as vehicles for improvisation and cross-cultural dialogue. Here I was particularly influenced by the tradition of "maddoh", a kind of sung spiritual poetry belonging to the Pamiri people of Badakhshan, in eastern Tajikistan. There are excellent recordings of this music released by Smithsonian Folkways in collaboration with the Aga Khan Music Initiative in Central Asia...definitely worth checking out.
